"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to start a band."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed confidence called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But the band will always be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
