Cameron Norrie secured the biggest win of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win marks Norrie's maiden win over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the fifth British man in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the most significant success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the most in-form player in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive premier event successes, which was the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's young career.

Game Analysis

The top seed appeared to be progressing easily to a win early on as he sailed past the first set. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back into the match by serving with sharper placement and engaging the Spaniard into prolonged, demanding rallies. His unceasing shot tolerance and reliability slowly made an impact.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The young star appeared especially uncomfortable hitting his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the game for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, the British player offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his reliability, athleticism and penetration throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and play aggressively.

Following battling for months due to a major physical setback and challenges with his form, Norrie dropped as far down as 91st in the rankings this year. Having reached the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 after that, this triumph reinforces the 30-year-old's development as he aims to return to the top 20 and beyond.
