Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
