More than 50 unaccompanied young refugees who went missing soon after coming the UK and while being looked after by official bodies are still missing, according to figures gathered.

Many of the unaccounted minors arrived in small boats or stowed away in the cargo areas of trucks and are presumed to have been seized by smugglers. This region is often the area where they initially reach.

Official Data Reveals Concerning Statistics

Freedom of information information has documented 345 children disappearing from local care, with 56 of those remaining unaccounted for.

From 2021 and 2023, when designated facilities for children operated along with other sites in various locations, 132 children vanished from the accommodations. Among them, 108 were eventually recovered but 24 are yet to be found.

From 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from welcome hubs for such children, with 182 located and 32 still missing.

Nationality Breakdown of Unaccounted Youths

In the two scenarios, minors from Albania were the largest group to vanish, making up a full half the aggregate from the hotels, 68, and in excess of one-fourth from the reception centres, 65.

The next most common nationalities to have vanished from both places are Afghan nationals followed by people from Iran.

Advocates emphasized more needed to be done to recover the vanished minors. "They have not chosen to vanish. These children should be engaging in sports in the park and studying for their GCSEs, not servicing smuggling networks in circumstances we know entail being chained to furniture, harmed and exploited, and punished by being starved of food."

Policy Shifts and Ongoing Concerns

In December 2023, after a extended legal proceeding relating to unaccompanied minor refugees vanishing from all designated facilities, the procedure of typically placing children in hotels was ruled unlawful.
