Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in security, dressing for the cold is completely essential.
