Per insights from a former senior officer from the Metropolitan police, police departments are increasingly pressured to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a rise in far-right speculation on online networks.

Recent Incident: Train Stabbing in Cambridgeshire

On Sunday morning, British Transport Police reported the detainment of two men following a mass stabbing aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Later, the older suspect was released with no further action, and authorities stated he had no connection in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, new guidelines were issued to address the dissemination of false narratives on social media, which had intensified after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in a English town previously.

However, campaigners warned that this move could unintentionally encourage an excessive focus on the ethnicity of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are withheld with the public.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, described the requirement for police to disclose the race of individuals in cases involving ethnic minorities as an "unintended consequence".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He voiced sympathy for his former colleagues in the force, explaining that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

A Conservative MP, whose district includes Huntingdon, described it “unfortunate” but essential for police to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, stating that online platforms are leveraged to push agendas, making it critical for police to provide accurate information to address rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the official disclosure, right-leaning politicians had called for a faster response. For instance, Chris Philp urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the public should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Moreover, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. One account named “UK Nationalist”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a individual with a blade had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Despite police confirmed that the suspects were British nationals, certain individuals continued to insinuate that information was being concealed. Ben Habib stated it was “hard to believe” that the attack was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to police assurances to the opposite.

Guidance Background

The guidance were developed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in recognition of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

This move came shortly after a political party accused authorities of concealing the details and immigration status of two men charged in a different incident in a UK county.

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds celebrating a football victory, local authorities revealed that the suspect was white and British to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

The NPCC stressed that decisions on releasing such information would remain with local departments, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would fall to the UK interior ministry, not law enforcement.
