The movie, though, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized image promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure version of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show released last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film based on a popular book sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, these events took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a casting call with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state in practice.

Analysts concur that the image of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his clandestine activities in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “007” could partly have been triggered by the actor's arrival as 007. His harder version prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. His influence is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
