The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly after his victory in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
