The Red Devils Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
