What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
